McCain camp accuses Obama camp of 'Swift Boat-style' attack

>> Monday, September 15, 2008

This is just absurd. The McCain campaign is accusing Obama of engaging in republican style attacks. The accusation stems from the release of an ad that hits McCain on his POW experience.

McCain-Palin spokesman Michael Goldfarb pointed to news reports as evidence the spot from Brave New PAC and Democracy for America had been launched “apparently at the behest of the Obama campaign.”

In the 30-second ad, McCain’s fellow prisoner of war Philip Butler describes the Republican nominee as “unfit to lead” – making the spot one of the first to mention McCain’s POW stint in a negative context.

"The prisoner of war experience is not a good prerequisite for president of the United States," says Carter. "He was known as a very volatile guy and he would blow up and go like a Roman candle. John McCain is not someone I would like to see with his finger near the red button."

The McCain campaign is trying to connect this ad to Obama on nothing more than conjecture. They cite a news article Obama greenlights 527's where unnamed Dem sources say that Obama changed his tune on 527's. The only problem is that there is no real evidence of this. None. Here is the relevant quote.

FireDogLake's Jane Hamsher reported that "a source close to the Obama campaign," acknowledged their position on independent expenditures was changing.

"Despite actively discouraging donors from giving to groups like Progressive Media at one point, they are now taking the position that it's nothing they have any control over," Hamsher wrote.

This is then actively refuted by bill Burton of the Obama campaign.

"Whoever is saying that has no idea what is going on inside our campaign," he said. "Senator Obama has said consistently that if folks want to help this effort, they should do so through our campaign."

This sounds to me just like those leaks that had the Obama fund raising efforts struggling in august. In fact those efforts went so poorly that the only raised a record 66 million last month. So what are we to think of these unnamed sources?

Obama has shown that his campaign does not leak. That is just not the way that they do things. So When McCain wants to blame Obama for this he has no cause.
